Impact Martial Arts Academy Curriculum

Martial Arts

A synthesis of the JUN FAN MARTIAL ARTS, FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS (KALI, ESCRIMA, ARNIS), INDONESIAN MARTIAL ARTS (PENTJAK SILAT) and BRAZILIAN JIUJITSU forms the nucleus of the curriculum taught at the IMPACT ACADEMY. The training methods and techniques from other martial arts are also incorporated and utilized in the training process e.g. ( SAVATE, BERSILAT, MUAY THAI, JIU-JITSU).

Our aim is to bring quality tuition to the forefront where the individual can gain long term benefits from participating in martial arts training. Along the journey you will not only benefit from the physical & mental aspects of training, but also from the many other rewards people gain from martial arts. We welcome beginners, advanced levels, men, women and children. We offer classes, personal training, seminars and small group training opportunities.

JUN FAN JEET KUNE DO

Bruce Lee and Dan LeeOur aim at the Impact Academy is to preserve and promote the original training methods & applications of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee is one of the most effective empty hand fighting systems to date. JKD consists of correct byjong (stance), footwork, kicking in both attack and defence, western boxing punches, strikes with fingers, palms, forearms, fists, elbows, knees, head butts, standing grappling, ground grappling, body evasion, hand defences, sensitivity drills & applications. All these are the trade marks of the Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do practitioner.

Many claims have been made over the years with regards to the proper definition of Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. To some it is a process of "Change", others see it as just a form of "modified" Wing Chun, whilst many recognize Jeet Kune Do to be simply a mixture of various different elements from numerous fighting styles, all combined to hopefully, at a later stage form something meaningful to the individual concerned.

However ... This is the core definition of Jeet Kune Do...

"Jeet Kune Do is the complete body of technical (physical, scientific) and philosophical (mental, social and spiritual) knowledge, that was studied and taught by Bruce Lee during his lifetime. It is concerned solely and exclusively with Bruce Lee's personal evolution and process of self-discovery through the Martial Art, as supported by written record (personal papers and library) and oral recollections (by those students who spent time with and/or studied under him)."

A distinction is made between this body of work (Jun Fan), and the individual student's own personal process of self discovery (JEET KUNE DO) through the martial art, as each student is free to use all, some or none of Bruce Lee's teachings to assist him! Jeet Kune Do accepts you as you are and is not about setting up restrictions or "Ways" of doing things - It seeks to be a source of inspiration and delight for those who possess an interest in Bruce Lee, and the martial viewpoints that he created.

Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do should be considered as the "Root" that was established by Bruce Lee, and NOT the ultimate goal of any practitioner, as students are expected to modify, add and delete all aspects of Jeet Kune Do until they develop something that is uniquely their own (You the individual become, through this process of self-discovery your own best teacher).

PENTJAK SILAT

The core of Indonesian combative arts are generally referred to as Pentjak Silat. Djurus, Lahkas, Kembangan and Sambuts are all important factors in the individuals progression of learning Pentjak Silat. Djurus teach us the correct upper body motions including various strikes with fists, elbows, forearms, palms, fingers; also parrying, deflecting & proper body alignment in conjunction to your opponent. Lahkas makes use of the various lower body positions including footwork patterns & positions and leg strengthening exercises. After these two training methods have been practiced repeatedly over a lengthy period of time then the individual can progress into combining the Djurus & Lahkas together. This may take shape in the form of a parry from a punch to the face taken from the motion of the Djuru, combined with a kick, sweep or an evasive motion learnt in the Lahkas. Thus the end result is a swift response to the attack.

KALI - ESCRIMA - ARNIS

Kali is a highly efficient and sophisticated weapons and empty-hands system from the Philippines. Although known mainly for its use and defence of weapons it's not limited to this. Besides excelling as a realistic self-defence system - through its use of weaponry, training in kali develops attributes such as speed, agility, timing, body mechanics, and good co-ordination.

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a sophisticated martial arts system that emphasises training in the grappling range. Students of this art will learn about takedowns, joint manipulations, chokes, how to achieve positional dominance on the ground and how to escape from less desirable positions. Emphasis is placed on leverage, and how to apply techniques with minimum strength. BJJ is normally performed in a gi, which serves as a training tool and gives the student a greater element of control. The art can also be modified for Submission Grappling, which is essentially grappling without a gi.

Gracie Barra Black Belt instructor and world champion, Carlos Lemos Jr, supervises the BJJ instruction at the Impact Academy. Click here to read more about Carlos.
